Light requirements

Basil loves the sun! It thrives in full sunlight, so make sure it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day for the best flavor and growth. If you're growing it indoors, a sunny windowsill is perfect.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

Basil prefers well-draining, rich, and slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). A loose, loamy soil mix with organic matter like compost will keep its roots happy and healthy. Good drainage is key—this herb doesn’t like to sit in waterlogged soil.

Water needs

Basil enjoys regular watering but doesn’t like being soggy. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, but make sure the soil drains well to prevent root rot. It also benefits from a little humidity, so misting occasionally or growing it near other plants can help it thrive.
