Description
Begonia semperflorens is a popular ornamental plant known for its colorful, waxy flowers and attractive foliage. It is typically grown as an annual in many regions, though in warmer climates, it can be treated as a perennial. The plant has thick, succulent-like leaves that can be green, bronze, or purple, and its flowers bloom in shades of pink, red, or white, adding vibrant color to gardens, borders, and containers. Its compact growth and continuous blooming habit make it an excellent choice for year-round interest in shaded or partially sunny spots. It is also favored for its easy-care nature and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions.
Light requirements
Begonia semperflorens prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning or late afternoon sun, but direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day, should be avoided as it may scorch the leaves. In lower light conditions, the plant will still grow, but it may not flower as prolifically.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant thrives in well-draining, moist soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5 to 7.0). It prefers soil that is rich in organic matter and can tolerate a variety of soil types as long as they drain well. Overly wet or soggy soil should be avoided, as this can cause root rot. A good potting mix designed for houseplants works well when planting in containers.
Water needs
Begonia semperflorens likes to be watered regularly, but it does not tolerate standing water. The soil should be kept evenly moist, but it should not be allowed to stay waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During the winter months, when the plant's growth slows, reduce watering. Be careful not to let the plant dry out completely, as this can stress the plant and reduce blooming.
