Description
Arachis glabrata, also known as Perennial Peanut, is a hardy, low-growing groundcover with lush, bright green foliage and yellow pea-like flowers that appear throughout the warmer months. Unlike traditional peanuts, this plant is not grown for its edible seeds but rather for its ornamental beauty and ability to create a dense, weed-suppressing carpet of greenery. The vibrant yellow flowers attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. It’s perfect for lawns, as a groundcover for slopes, or in areas where you want to suppress weeds naturally. Its drought-tolerant nature also makes it an excellent choice for sustainable landscaping.
Light requirements
This plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate light shade. For optimal growth and flowering, it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. While it can survive in shaded areas, it will produce fewer flowers in low-light conditions.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Perennial Peanut prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. It grows best in sandy or loamy soil but is quite adaptable to various soil types, as long as drainage is adequate. It’s also relatively tolerant of poorer soils compared to other groundcovers. Ensure the soil doesn’t retain too much water, as the plant prefers slightly drier conditions once established.
Water needs
Water regularly, especially during the establishment phase. Once it is well-established, Arachis glabrata is relatively drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering. During periods of drought, it can survive with minimal water, but regular watering will encourage more robust growth and flowering. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.
