Odontonema strictum is a stunning, tropical shrub that features long, upright spikes of vivid red tubular flowers, which resemble firecrackers in bloom. Light requirements
This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it blooms most profusely when it receives several hours of direct sunlight each day. In shadier spots, it may still grow well but will likely produce fewer flowers. It’s ideal for garden beds with good exposure to light, especially in tropical or subtropical climates.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Odontonema strictum prefers well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter and slightly acidic to neutral in pH (6.0–7.0). A loamy mix with added sand or perlite will ensure good drainage. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as the plant is susceptible to root rot if its roots stay too wet.
Water needs
This plant enjoys moderate watering and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry. Be sure to water deeply and allow the excess water to drain away. Once established, Odontonema strictum is fairly drought-tolerant, but it benefits from extra watering during dry spells. During cooler months, water less frequently as the plant’s growth slows.
