Description
Mondo Grass is a versatile, low-growing perennial that’s often used as a ground cover or border plant due to its dense, grassy foliage and neat, uniform appearance. It features narrow, dark green leaves that form dense clumps, creating a lush carpet effect. In late summer, it produces small, bell-shaped purple or white flowers, followed by black berries. Mondo Grass is an easy-to-care-for plant that’s perfect for adding texture and contrast in shady or partly sunny spots. It works well as a lawn substitute in low-traffic areas or as an accent plant in container gardens.
Light requirements
Mondo Grass thrives in partial to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. It does best in areas that receive filtered light, but it can adapt to areas with dappled sunlight. If grown in full sun, its foliage may become stressed, especially in hot climates, so it's better to provide some shade during the hottest parts of the day.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant prefers well-draining, moist soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but it flourishes in rich, loamy soil. Good drainage is important to prevent water from sitting around the roots, which can lead to rot. Adding organic matter to the soil can improve its texture and drainage.
Water needs
Mondo Grass has moderate water needs. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Once established, it’s somewhat drought-tolerant, though it will perform best with regular watering. During dry spells, be sure to water deeply to keep the plant healthy. It’s important not to let the plant dry out completely, especially during the growing season.
