Like all cycads, the coontie has ancient origins. But this Florida plant is the only cycad native to the United States. It’s also the preferred food source for larvae of the rare Atala butterfly.

Binomial name

Zamia integrifolia, Zamia pumila

Common names

Coontie, Florida Arrowroot

Description

The Coontie is a slow-growing, hardy cycad native to the southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean. With its glossy, feathery fronds and compact growth, it’s an excellent choice for adding a tropical, textural element to gardens or landscapes. While it may not flower as frequently as other plants, its unique, leathery foliage makes it an attractive year-round addition. This plant is also well-known for its ability to tolerate a range of conditions, including drought, and is low-maintenance.

Light requirements

The Coontie does best in full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright light, which helps maintain its healthy green color and bushy appearance. In shadier areas, it may grow slower and have less dense foliage. It can tolerate some shade, but sunlight will yield the best results.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This cycad prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0). It’s particularly suited for soil that doesn’t retain too much moisture, as it’s sensitive to waterlogging.

Water needs

While the Coontie is drought-tolerant once established, it appreciates occasional watering, especially during dry spells. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch but avoid letting it stay too wet for long. It’s a resilient plant, so err on the side of slightly under-watering rather than over-watering to prevent root rot.
