Binomial name
Gardenia jasminoides
Common names
Gardenia, Cape Jasmine
Light requirements
Gardenias love bright, indirect light. They thrive in spots with plenty of filtered sunlight but can tolerate some direct morning sun. If you're growing them indoors, a bright windowsill or a location with plenty of indirect sunlight works best. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Gardenia jasminoides prefers rich, well-draining, acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.0). A well-balanced potting mix with added organic matter will help it flourish. Make sure the soil drains well, as gardenias don’t like to sit in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
Water needs
Gardenias need consistent moisture but don’t like being waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but allow it to dry slightly between waterings. Be mindful not to overwater, as standing water around the roots can cause problems. Gardenias also appreciate a little humidity, so misting or placing them near other plants can help.
