Light requirements
This native beauty loves the sunshine! Plant it in full sun for the best berry production, but it can handle partial shade if needed—just expect fewer berries in shadier spots.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Callicarpa americana isn’t fussy about soil, as long as it drains well. It can thrive in sandy, loamy, or even clay soils. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 5.5–7.0) keeps it at its happiest.
Water needs
While young, it appreciates regular watering to establish strong roots. Once mature, this plant can tolerate short dry spells but still prefers a little extra moisture during prolonged droughts. A good soak now and then will keep it lush and berry-filled.
