Cryptanthus, commonly called earth stars, are terrestrial bromeliads grown for their colorful, low rosettes. The Frazzle Dazzle and Bright Pink varieties add vivid foliage to containers, shaded beds, patios, and indoor plant displays.
Light: Give bright filtered light, dappled shade, or gentle morning sun. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can bleach or scorch the foliage. Indoors, place near bright indirect light.
Soil: Use a loose, organic, well-drained potting mix. Unlike tank-forming bromeliads, Cryptanthus grows in soil.
Water: Water around the root zone when the surface begins to dry. Keep it evenly moist in hot weather, but never waterlogged.
Growth: Plants form offsets, or pups, that can be separated once established. Protect from cold and frost.
