Description
Rhaphiolepis indica, or Indian Hawthorn, is a versatile evergreen shrub that brings year-round beauty to any garden. With its dense, glossy green foliage and clusters of small, pink to white flowers that bloom in early spring, this shrub adds both color and texture to the landscape. The glossy leaves turn a subtle red or bronze in the cooler months, enhancing its ornamental appeal. As a low-maintenance shrub, Indian Hawthorn is perfect for hedges, foundation plantings, or as a standalone feature. It’s also known for being drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for water-wise gardens.
Light requirements
Plant in full sun with good air circulation for dense growth and flowering. Indian Hawthorn is susceptible to Entomosporium leaf spot, especially where foliage stays wet or plants receive too little sun. Space plants to allow airflow and water at soil level rather than using overhead irrigation.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Rhaphiolepis indica prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.0. It’s adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or slightly clayey soil. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, so ensure the soil drains well, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or in containers. Indian Hawthorn is relatively tolerant of poor soils once established.
Water needs
Water regularly, especially during the warmer months when the plant is actively growing, but make sure the soil drains well and never becomes soggy. Rhaphiolepis indica is drought-tolerant once established, so reduce watering once the plant is mature. During the winter months, water sparingly but ensure the soil doesn't dry out completely. Be careful not to overwater, as too much moisture can lead to root rot.
