New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) produces masses of daisy-like flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Purple and pink selections are offered in quart-size pots; exact named cultivars may vary with supplier availability.
South Florida trial: We are currently evaluating its long-term performance in local gardens. It is best treated as a seasonal flowering plant until its site performance is confirmed.
Light: Grow in full sun for the strongest flowering. A little afternoon shade may help during the hottest weather.
Soil: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil that can retain some moisture without staying waterlogged.
Water: Keep evenly moist while establishing and during active flowering. Avoid letting the root ball remain soggy.
Pollinators: The nectar-rich blooms provide a valuable food source for visiting butterflies and bees.
