Description
Ixora is a colorful, evergreen shrub that adds a vibrant burst of red, orange, pink, or yellow flowers to your garden throughout the year. Known for its compact growth habit and glossy, dark green foliage, this shrub is perfect for hedges, borders, or as an accent plant. The small, tubular flowers grow in dense clusters, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Ixora is ideal for tropical and subtropical gardens, where its bright blooms and lush foliage create a cheerful, tropical atmosphere. Whether you use it in a flower bed or a container, Ixora is sure to stand out with its bright, flame-like flowers.
Light requirements
Ixora thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. However, it will flower most abundantly and maintain its compact, bushy shape in areas that receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In shadier conditions, the plant may become leggy and its blooms may be less profuse, so choose a sunny spot for optimal growth and flower production.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Ixora prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH ranging from 5.5 to 6.5. It thrives in rich, loamy soil but can tolerate a variety of soil types as long as they drain well. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot, so ensure the soil doesn’t remain soggy. If planting in a container, use a well-draining potting mix and provide proper drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
Water needs
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the hot summer months. Ixora prefers consistent moisture, but avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot. During cooler months, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows down. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent waterlogging, and allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
