Description
Haworthia zebra, commonly known as the Zebra Haworthia, is a small, striking succulent that’s perfect for adding a touch of architectural beauty to your home or garden. Its rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves are dark green with white, horizontal stripes that resemble the pattern of a zebra, hence its name. These patterns become more pronounced with good sunlight. This low-maintenance plant is a perfect addition to succulent collections or windowsills, requiring little care beyond occasional watering and a sunny spot. Haworthia zebra thrives indoors, especially in small containers, and is an ideal choice for those new to succulent care.
Light requirements
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can scorch the leaves, so it’s best to keep it in a spot that gets plenty of natural light but with some protection from harsh midday sun. A windowsill with filtered light is perfect for this easygoing succulent.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Haworthia zebra prefers well-draining, sandy or cactus mix soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 7.0. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent water from sitting around the roots, which can lead to root rot. If planting in a container, make sure to use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining mix. This plant is very forgiving when it comes to soil conditions, as long as it doesn’t stay too wet.
Water needs
Water your Zebra Haworthia sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. As a succulent, it’s better to underwater than overwater this plant, as it stores water in its leaves. During the growing season (spring to summer), water once every 1-2 weeks. In winter, reduce watering even further, as the plant goes dormant and requires less moisture. Always ensure the soil is dry to the touch before watering again.
