Description
Devil's Backbone is a succulent shrub with distinctive zigzag stems. Our stock is recorded as the variegated form, with green and cream foliage. Red, slipper-shaped bracts may appear around its small flowers. Grow in bright filtered light or gentle morning sun with well-drained soil. Avoid intense sun that can scorch foliage. Its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes; wear gloves when pruning and keep plant parts away from children and pets.
Light requirements
Provide bright, indirect light or partial shade with gentle morning sun. Acclimate plants gradually to stronger light and protect variegated foliage from scorching afternoon sun.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). As with most succulents, it needs excellent drainage to avoid root rot, so be sure the soil is light and porous. If growing in a pot, ensure the container has drainage holes.
Water needs
Water when the soil is dry 1–2 inches below the surface, then let excess water drain. Avoid standing water and reduce watering during cooler weather. Prolonged dryness can cause leaf drop.
