Binomial name
Coriandrum sativum
Common names
Cilantro, Coriander, Chinese Parsley
Description
Cilantro is a versatile herb loved for its aromatic leaves and seeds, both of which are staples in cuisines worldwide. The fresh, zesty leaves add a citrusy kick to dishes, while the seeds, known as coriander, bring a warm, nutty flavor when dried or ground. It’s a quick-growing annual that’s as useful in the kitchen as it is attractive in the garden.
Light requirements
Cilantro thrives in full sun but appreciates some afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent it from bolting (flowering too early). A sunny windowsill works perfectly for indoor growth.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This herb prefers well-draining, moderately rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.2–6.8). A loamy or sandy soil enriched with organic matter helps it grow lush and healthy.
Water needs
Cilantro likes consistent moisture, so water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as it can cause the plant to bolt. Mulching can help retain soil moisture, especially in warmer weather.
