Description
Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as Pothos or Devil’s Ivy, is a beloved, low-maintenance houseplant that’s perfect for beginners or those looking to add some greenery to their space. With its heart-shaped, glossy leaves that often feature vibrant yellow or white marbling, this trailing vine is both striking and versatile. It’s known for its ability to grow in a variety of conditions, from hanging baskets to shelves, or trained to climb trellises and walls. Epipremnum aureum is not just decorative—it’s also a natural air purifier, making it a great choice for indoor environments. It’s a plant that thrives on neglect, tolerating low light and irregular watering, and it will reward you with lush foliage year-round.
Light requirements
This plant is incredibly adaptable when it comes to light. It can grow in bright, indirect light, but it also tolerates lower light conditions, making it perfect for offices, bedrooms, or spots that don’t get a lot of natural sunlight. While it thrives in moderate to bright light, too much direct sun can scorch its leaves, so it's best to keep it out of the harsh midday sun.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Pothos prefers well-draining, light, and slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of 6.1 to 6.8. It thrives in standard potting mix, but you can also add perlite or sand to improve drainage. This plant doesn't mind if the soil isn't overly rich, as long as it drains well. Overly compacted or soggy soil should be avoided, as it may lead to root rot.
Water needs
Water when the top inch or so of soil feels dry to the touch. Epipremnum aureum is relatively drought-tolerant and can go without water for a while, but it will grow best with regular watering. Be careful not to overwater, as this plant is susceptible to root rot. During the winter months, when the plant is not actively growing, you can reduce watering slightly.
