Description
Dracaena marginata, commonly known as the Madagascar Dragon Tree, is a striking and low-maintenance indoor plant. With its narrow, arching leaves that feature red edges, it adds a touch of drama to any space. The long, slender stems create a tree-like appearance, making it perfect for brightening corners or as a focal point in a room. This hardy plant is known for its ability to tolerate a variety of conditions, making it an ideal choice for beginners or those with less-than-perfect growing environments. Its elegant form and easy care requirements make it a favorite in both homes and offices.
Light requirements
Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. While it can adapt to low light, the plant will grow more slowly and may lose some of its vibrant red margins. For the best growth and color, place it in a spot that receives filtered sunlight.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Prefers well-draining, loamy soil with a neutral pH (around 6.0 to 7.0). It’s essential to use a potting mix that retains some moisture but doesn’t stay soggy. Good drainage is key to preventing root rot.
Water needs
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Dracaena marginata prefers slightly dry conditions between waterings, so be sure not to overwater. During the winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows. Always ensure the soil isn’t soggy, as this can lead to root rot.
