Common names
Hanging Lobster Claw, False Bird of Paradise
Description
Heliconia rostrata is a striking tropical plant celebrated for its spectacular, pendulous bracts that resemble lobster claws. These vibrant bracts, in shades of red, yellow, and green, are long-lasting and provide an exotic flair to gardens and floral arrangements. Its lush, banana-like foliage enhances its ornamental appeal, making it a favorite for tropical landscapes or as a dramatic focal point in gardens. This fast-growing plant thrives in warm, humid climates and attracts pollinators like hummingbirds, adding life and color to outdoor spaces.
Light requirements
Prefers full sun to partial shade. For the brightest bracts and vigorous growth, provide it with 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily. It can tolerate some shade but may flower less in low-light conditions.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Thrives in rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Enrich the soil with organic matter like compost or mulch to retain moisture and provide nutrients. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
Water needs
Loves consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. Water deeply when the top inch of soil starts to dry out, ensuring that it doesn’t become waterlogged. During the dormant season, reduce watering slightly but never let the soil dry out completely.
