Common names

Fountain Grass, White Fountain Grass

Description

Pennisetum setaceum is a graceful ornamental grass that adds a soft, flowing texture to any garden. In late summer and fall, it produces feathery, plume-like flower heads that resemble fountains, hence the name. The flowers of this variety are white in color, creating a beautiful contrast against the green foliage. This plant works well in containers, garden borders, or as an accent in mixed plantings, and it’s easy to grow, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes.

Light requirements

Fountain Grass thrives in full sun to partial shade. It will flower best and grow most vigorously in full sun, where it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. If planted in partial shade, it may still grow well, but flowering may be less abundant.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This grass prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). While it can tolerate a range of soil types, the key is good drainage—Pennisetum setaceum doesn’t like soggy roots. Well-draining soil will allow the plant to grow strong and healthy.

Water needs

Fountain Grass is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but it benefits from regular watering during its growing season. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, but be careful not to overwater. In cooler months, when the plant’s growth slows, reduce watering to avoid waterlogging.
