Senecio barbertonicus

Common names

Barberton Senecio, Barberton Ragwort

Description

Senecio barbertonicus is a charming succulent native to South Africa, known for its striking, silver-gray leaves that form rosettes, giving the plant a beautiful, textured appearance. The leaves are lance-shaped and covered in fine hairs, which enhance its silvery hue and contribute to its overall unique look. In late spring or summer, it produces small, yellow daisy-like flowers that stand out against the foliage. This plant is perfect for succulent collections or as an eye-catching focal point in your garden or home.

Light requirements

Barberton Senecio thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. A sunny spot with several hours of morning or late afternoon sunlight is ideal. Too much harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves, so it’s important to find a balance. It can also do well in slightly shaded areas, though it may not flower as prolifically in low light.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

Senecio barbertonicus prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0–7.0. Sandy, cactus, or succulent soil mixes are ideal, as they allow for good airflow and drainage. This plant is highly susceptible to root rot if it is planted in soil that retains moisture, so ensure your pot has drainage holes and the soil dries out between waterings.

Water needs

Like most succulents, Barberton Senecio prefers to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out in between, especially during the cooler months when growth slows. During the warmer growing season, water when the top few inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot and other fungal diseases.
