Description
Delonix regia, known for its stunning display of vibrant orange-red flowers, is one of the most beautiful tropical trees. Commonly referred to as the Royal Poinciana or Flame Tree, it can reach heights of up to 40 feet and produces a canopy of lush, fern-like leaves. In late spring to early summer, it blooms in a spectacular show of large, fiery flowers that attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. Its wide, umbrella-shaped crown makes it a perfect shade tree, ideal for large spaces. However, it requires enough room to stretch out and grow, so it's best planted in spacious yards or parks.
Light requirements
Delonix regia thrives in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to bloom profusely. It's a tropical tree, so it does well in warm, sunny locations. Providing it with plenty of sunlight will encourage its vibrant blooms and strong growth.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This tree prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0 to 7.5). It tolerates a variety of soil types but struggles in heavy, clay soils that retain too much moisture. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. It’s quite drought-tolerant once established, but it grows best with regular watering during dry periods.
Water needs
While Delonix regia is somewhat drought-tolerant, it grows best with regular watering, particularly during dry spells. It prefers deep watering to encourage deep root growth but does not like its roots sitting in water. During the growing season, ensure that the soil remains moist but well-drained. Reduce watering during the dormant winter months, but do not let the soil dry out completely.
