Binomial name

Mangave (hybrid genus, often Agave × Manfreda)

Common names

Mangave, Manfreda Agave

Description

Mangave is a relatively new hybrid genus that combines the hardiness of agave with the ornamental appeal of manfreda. Known for its striking, rosette-forming leaves that feature dramatic spots, stripes, or variegated patterns, Mangave makes a bold statement in any garden or container. These succulents often have a slightly softer texture compared to their agave relatives, with some varieties even exhibiting a purplish hue. While they share the same drought tolerance as agave, their unique foliage patterns and low-growing nature make them a popular choice for both modern landscapes and traditional xeriscaping.

Light requirements

Prefers full sun to partial shade. In bright sunlight, its colors become more intense, especially in varieties with purple or red tints. However, it can tolerate light shade, though the color may not be as vibrant in low light conditions.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

Mangave thrives in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0). It prefers sandy or rocky soil with excellent drainage to avoid water retention around the roots. Adding sand or grit to the soil can improve drainage, making it an ideal choice for xeriscaping.

Water needs

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Mangave is highly drought-tolerant once established and is best suited to low-water environments. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to err on the side of under-watering rather than over-watering.
