Binomial name

Tecomaria capensis

Common names

Cape Honeysuckle, Cape Trumpet Vine

Light requirements

Tecomaria capensis thrives in full sun! It loves soaking up the sun and will produce its vibrant orange or red tubular flowers when given plenty of direct light. It can tolerate some light shade, but for the best blooms, place it in a sunny spot. It’s a great choice for a sunny garden or a bright, sunny patio.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This plant prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.0). It does well in sandy, loamy, or even somewhat rocky soils. Ensure the soil drains well to prevent waterlogged roots, as Tecomaria capensis doesn’t like its roots sitting in stagnant water.

Water needs

Cape Honeysuckle enjoys regular watering but is quite drought-tolerant once established. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid overwatering. It’s best to let the soil dry out a little between waterings. During the growing season, consistent moisture will help it thrive, but be sure to avoid soggy soil
