Description

Bulbine is a hardy, low-maintenance succulent that adds a pop of color to gardens with its bright yellow or orange star-shaped flowers. This plant has thick, fleshy leaves that store water, making it incredibly drought-tolerant once established. Its sprawling growth habit and attractive blooms make it a great choice for rock gardens, borders, or containers. Not only is it visually appealing, but it’s also a tough plant that can handle the heat and requires very little care.

Light requirements

Bulbine prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. For the best blooming and growth, place it in an area where it can get at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. In shadier spots, it will still grow, but its flowering may be less prolific.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This plant thrives in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Good drainage is key, as it doesn’t like soggy conditions. Adding sand or gravel to the soil will help improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Water needs

Once established, Bulbine is highly drought-tolerant. Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During the rainy season, it may need less frequent watering, while in drier periods, it can handle occasional deep watering. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
