Butterfly Pea
Binomial name
Clitoria ternatea
Common names
Butterfly Pea, Blue Pea, Asian Pigeonwings
Light requirements
Clitoria ternatea loves full sun and will bloom its most vibrant, deep blue flowers when exposed to plenty of sunlight. It can tolerate a little light shade, but for optimal growth and flowering, a sunny spot is best. If you're growing it indoors, make sure it gets bright, indirect light.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). It does best in loamy or sandy soil, with good drainage to prevent root rot. Adding organic matter to the soil will help it thrive, but make sure the soil doesn’t stay too wet.
Water needs
Water regularly, keeping the soil moderately moist, but let it dry out between waterings. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture during the growing season will encourage the best blooms. Be sure not to overwater—good drainage is essential.
