Description
Russelia equisetiformis is a charming, fast-growing shrub known for its delicate, arching stems and bright, tubular flowers that resemble firecrackers in bloom. This plant is a showstopper, with its cascading sprays of vibrant red or orange flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It thrives in warm climates and is often used in hanging baskets, containers, or as a low hedge in garden beds. Whether grown as a groundcover or a hanging accent, Russelia equisetiformis adds a splash of color and a tropical vibe to any garden.
Light requirements
This plant loves full sun and will flower best when exposed to at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In shadier spots, it may still grow but might produce fewer flowers. It’s perfect for sunny garden beds or patios where it can spread out and shine.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Russelia equisetiformis prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). A mix of potting soil with added sand or perlite will provide excellent drainage. This plant is drought-tolerant once established, but it thrives best in fertile, moist soil that drains well.
Water needs
Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, the Firecracker Plant is fairly drought-tolerant, but it will appreciate a deep watering during dry spells. In cooler months, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows.
