Description
The Carmona microphylla, also known as Fukien Tea Tree, is a small, evergreen shrub that brings a touch of elegance to both indoor and outdoor spaces. With its glossy, dark green leaves and delicate white flowers, this plant is often used in bonsai, though it also does beautifully in traditional landscaping. It’s native to Southeast Asia and gets its name from the Fukien province in China. The plant produces tiny, star-like flowers that bloom in clusters, often followed by small, red berries that add visual interest. Its compact size and attractive foliage make it a versatile plant for a variety of settings.
Light requirements
Fukien Tea Tree thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. If grown indoors, it should be placed near a sunny window to get at least a few hours of light each day. While it can handle a bit of shade, it won’t bloom as well without sufficient light. Outdoors, it prefers a sunny spot with some afternoon shade to protect it from intense heat.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). It thrives in rich, loamy soil but can tolerate other soil types as long as they drain well. The key to healthy growth is good drainage, so make sure the soil isn’t too heavy or soggy. If grown in a container, use a well-draining potting mix to prevent water from sitting around the roots.
Water needs
Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Carmona microphylla doesn’t like to be overwatered, as it can lead to root rot. During the growing season, it will need more frequent watering, but in winter, you can reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows down. Ensure the pot or ground has good drainage to avoid stagnant water.
