Light requirements

Zamia furfuracea is quite flexible when it comes to light. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sun, especially in cooler climates. It can adapt to lower light levels, making it a great choice for indoor spaces with medium to low light. However, for the best growth and health, a spot with bright, filtered light is ideal.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This palm prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). It grows best in sandy, loamy, or even rocky soil that drains quickly, as it doesn’t like its roots sitting in soggy conditions. A well-draining potting mix with added perlite or sand will help prevent root rot.

Water needs

Water it regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. This plant is drought-tolerant once established, so it can handle a little neglect in the watering department. However, it’s best to keep the soil moderately moist during the growing season, while letting it dry out a bit in between. Overwatering should be avoided, as this plant does not like to sit in standing water.
