Light requirements

Bromeliads love bright, indirect light. They can tolerate a little direct sunlight, but too much can scorch their colorful leaves. A bright spot with filtered light is ideal, especially if you're growing them indoors. They’ll thrive in a well-lit room without the harshness of direct sun.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

Neoregelia prefers well-draining, light, and slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0). A mix that retains moisture but doesn’t stay soggy works best—think a combination of potting soil with perlite or sand for drainage. These plants don’t like their roots sitting in water, so good drainage is key.

Water needs

Bromeliads are fairly low-maintenance when it comes to water. They prefer to have their "tank" (the center of their rosette) filled with water, but don’t let it stagnate. Water the base and let it dry out between waterings. Be sure to empty the tank occasionally to prevent any buildup of debris or stagnant water. Keep the soil lightly moist, but let it dry out between waterings.
