Light requirements
Bougainvillea loves the sun! It thrives in full sun and will reward you with vibrant, colorful blooms when it gets plenty of light. If you’re growing it indoors, make sure it has access to lots of direct sunlight, but it can handle a little light shade too, especially in hotter climates.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant prefers well-draining soil, ideally sandy or loamy with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Bougainvillea doesn’t like its roots to sit in water, so make sure your soil has good drainage to keep it happy and healthy.
Water needs
Bougainvillea is quite drought-tolerant once established, but it still appreciates regular watering during dry spells. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, but let it dry out a bit between waterings. It’s best not to overwater this plant—good drainage is key to preventing root rot.
