Bottle Palm
Binomial name
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis
Common names
Bottle Palm, Palm Bottle
Light requirements
This unique palm thrives in full sun but can tolerate some light shade, especially in hotter climates. For the best growth and most striking appearance, give it plenty of direct sunlight. If you’re growing it indoors, a bright, sunny spot is ideal.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis prefers well-draining, sandy, and slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). A well-balanced potting mix with added perlite or sand for drainage will help keep the roots healthy. Make sure the soil drains well to prevent root rot, as this palm doesn’t like to sit in waterlogged soil.
Water needs
This palm enjoys regular watering, but it doesn’t like to be overwatered. Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. While it’s relatively drought-tolerant once established, it will grow best with consistent moisture. Just be sure to let the soil drain properly to avoid waterlogging.
