Description
Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a striking tropical shrub or small tree known for its flamboyant display of vibrant, fiery flowers in shades of red, orange, and yellow. The flowers are accompanied by long, delicate stamens, giving them an exotic and feathery appearance. Its feathery, fern-like foliage adds texture and contrast, making it a favorite in ornamental gardens. This plant thrives in warm climates and is often used as a show-stopping centerpiece, a hedge, or even a specimen plant. Fast-growing and relatively low-maintenance, the Peacock Flower lives up to its name by stealing the show wherever it’s planted.
Light requirements
This plant loves the sun! Full sun is essential for Caesalpinia pulcherrima to bloom profusely and grow vigorously. It can tolerate partial shade, but its flowering might not be as prolific in less sunny spots. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best performance.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
Peacock Flower is not fussy about soil types and can thrive in sandy, loamy, or even rocky soils, as long as there’s good drainage. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0–7.5. This plant is tolerant of poor soils, but adding organic matter can boost its growth and flowering potential.
Water needs
Once established, Caesalpinia pulcherrima is highly drought-tolerant, making it a great choice for xeriscaping. During its initial growth phase, water it regularly to help establish a strong root system. Afterward, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering should be avoided, as it prefers well-drained, slightly dry conditions.
