Description

Dracaena reflexa, also known as the Song of India, is a striking tropical plant that can bring a touch of elegance to any space. It features  nonarrow, arching leaves that are green with vibrant yellow or cream-colored stripes along the edges, giving the plant a beautiful, variegated look. The plant has a tree-like growth habit, with long, slender stems and clusters of leaves at the top, forming a bushy appearance.

Light requirements

Dracaena reflexa prefers bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate some low light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to scorch, so it’s best to keep it in a spot with filtered light or near a window with sheer curtains. If the plant doesn’t receive enough light, its growth may become leggy, and the vibrant leaf colors may fade.

Soil preferences, including pH and drainage

This plant thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. It’s important to use a potting mix that drains well, such as a general-purpose indoor plant mix or a blend designed for tropical plants. Avoid soils that retain too much moisture, as Dracaena reflexa is susceptible to root rot. If growing in a container, ensure the pot has proper drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Water needs

Dracaena reflexa enjoys moderate watering. The soil should be kept slightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch or so of the soil to dry out before watering again, and ensure that excess water drains away to avoid waterlogging the roots. In the winter months, when the plant is growing more slowly, reduce watering slightly.
