Christmas Cactus
Description
The Holiday Cactus is a beloved houseplant known for its vibrant, tubular flowers that bloom in shades of pink, red, white, or orange during the winter holidays. Unlike traditional cacti, this plant has flattened, segmented stems and thrives in more humid conditions. Its cascading growth habit makes it a perfect choice for hanging baskets or decorative pots.
Light requirements
Schlumbergera thrives in bright, indirect light. It prefers filtered sunlight or partial shade and should be protected from harsh direct sun, which can scorch its leaves. Indoors, it’s happiest near a north or east-facing window.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This plant loves well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Use a cactus or succulent potting mix, or amend regular potting soil with sand or perlite to ensure good drainage. Avoid heavy, compacted soils that retain water.
Water needs
Water your Holiday Cactus when the top inch of soil feels dry. It enjoys evenly moist soil during its growing and blooming seasons but doesn’t like sitting in water. Reduce watering in the dormant period after blooming. Be sure to provide good drainage to avoid root rot.
