Bougainvillea arborea, Tree Bougainvillea
Binomial name
Bougainvillea arborea
Common names
Tree Bougainvillea, Arborescent Bougainvillea
Light requirements
Like other Bougainvilleas, Bougainvillea arborea thrives in full sun! The more sunlight it receives, the more vibrant its colorful bracts will be. It can tolerate some light shade, especially in hotter climates, but for optimal growth and blooms, it needs plenty of direct sunlight.
Soil preferences, including pH and drainage
This variety of Bougainvillea prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). It grows best in sandy or loamy soil that drains quickly. Be sure the soil doesn’t stay soggy, as Bougainvillea arborea doesn't like to have its roots constantly wet.
Water needs
Bougainvillea arborea is drought-tolerant once established, but it still enjoys regular watering during dry spells. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, allowing it to dry out between waterings. Overwatering should be avoided, as this plant prefers to dry out between waterings rather than staying constantly moist.
